Russell Beattie Blogging Again

Russell Beattie, a mobile developer and now entrepreneur, took a break from blogging for the last year, but is back at it again. If you’re interested in mobile devices and trends, Russell’s blog is worth following: Russell Beattie’s Weblog » Filling in the gaps. Also worth checking out is Russell’s new site Mowser which transforms normal web sites to make them readable on mobile devices. Initial results look promising and I want to dive into this a bit deeper. Russell is also running mobitopia which is a mobile bookmark site (based on open-source software). I need to keep an eye on that…

Testing Joomla on Windows with XAMPP

Continuing to experiment with my XAMPP setup (Apache, MySQL, Perl and PHP for Windows XP), I just installed Joomla, a popular open-source content management system. It only took about 10 minutes to install Joomla 1.0 using these steps: Visit the Joomla project page and download Joomla Extract the files to c:\xampp\htdocs, making sure to use the folder names inside the Zip file (if done correctly, you should have a file c:\xampp\htdocs\joomla\index.php) Open the local phpMyAdmin page and login as root Select Databases and create a database named joomla with encoding utf8_unicode_ci Select Privileges tab and create a user joomla and password of your choice,…

My Podcast List

Finding and keeping up with quality podcasts is not easy. I have some ideas for a better “podcatching” client that would help with this, but in the meantime it’s a manual process to keep pruning my subscriptions to a manageable level. Web Development for iPhone

With the launch of the iPhone, Apple has finally posted some documentation to help web designers understand the browsing capabilities of the mobile Safari browser: Web Development for iPhone. I was looking for this sort of information before the launch, but I guess it was under NDA. Maybe those who attended WWDC this year were privy to the info? In any case, the most interesting content is a guide titled Optimizing Web Applications and Content for iPhone. The guide gives a good explanation of the user interactions on the phone and explains how to target content, including some iPhone-specific meta tags…

Poor Man’s Margaritas

Tonight we enjoyed a few “Poor Man’s Margaritas”, a recipe I picked up from my buddies Chris and Ron a couple years ago at the Gnomedex conference. The recipe is quite simple: Good tequila (tonight I had Cazadores) Odwalla’s Summertime Lime Juice Use whatever ratio you’re comfortable with. Voila, instant margarita. It’s not really “poor” in the sense that it’s cheap, but you can make them anywhere. This juice from Odwalla is only made in the summer, so hurry out and try some!
