It was only 5 short weeks ago that we launched the beta for Yahoo! Messenger 8. Since then we’ve been busy putting on the finishing touches and fixing a bunch of reported bugs. The result came out earlier this evening as we launched the production release of version 8. As is kind of typical for internet software like this, the beta tends to garner much more attention, so when you finally push the production version, there isn’t always as much fanfare. But, this is the time that a broader marketing campaign will kick in, including promoting upgrades to the new…
Some recent AJAX experimenting and the release of a developer plugin interface for Yahoo! Messenger have led me to dusting off my Javascript knowledge. Particularly with the Messenger plugins (written in HTML with a healthy dose of Javascript), we’ve really seen some poorly written code, both internal and external. I’m starting to put together my own plugin developer guide and have been on the lookout for good articles on the subject. Christian Heilmann just wrote a great article on Vitamin called The Importance of Maintainable JavaScript: JavaScript is hip again; there’s no doubt about it. But if you’re starting to…
“Interop” has been the buzz phrase at work the past few months and tonight Yahoo! and Microsoft coordinated the launch of instant messaging interop between the two systems. This means you can stay on your Yahoo Messenger client and add MSN buddies directly (and vice versa). It may not be as prevalent in the press release or news http://www.doxycycline-buy.com/ coverage, but the recent beta of the Yahoo! Messenger for Mac client also works with MSN buddies, so we open up another channel for Mac users. To participate, you need to register on each side and make sure you’re running a…
This afternoon we launched a public beta of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0. According to my information, our last Mac release was in September 2003, or almost 3 years ago! This release is basically an all-new client and should hopefully show that we’re back in the Mac business. I know there is a lot planned for this client, so we should keep the Mac support getting better with each release. I’m on the lookout for interesting reviews of the new release. TechCrunch had this to say: Its feature set is interesting, but it appears to lack two of the PC…
This Monday night we released the beta for Yahoo! Messenger 8.0. This release has the usual set of UI improvements and feature changes here and there, but the big news is that Messenger is now opened up for developers. We’ve added support for two types of plug-ins: Tab plug-ins load in the lower part of the main application window while Conversation plug-ins load on the side of a 2-way IM conversation. The Yahoo Developer Network has all the details including the Messenger SDK. We’re also part of the beta Gallery site which will host plug-ins written by Yahoo and 3rd-party…
