Palm Fall 03 Products

Warning: This is a shameless plug for my employer. Today Palm launched the new Fall product line consisting of three new products. Products are developed like clockwork (more or less) at Palm; each Spring and Fall brings a new set of products and the development projects behind them. The software for the “Fall 03” stuff was actually wrapped up in July for the most part, so we're busy at work on “Spring 04”. As usual there is a fair amount of press coverage of the launch. SmbMate

Via PalmInfocenter, I learned about SmbMate which provides access to SMB servers from your Palm device. I've just tried it on my Tungsten C over 802.11 and it works well. File transfer speeds were not great, but that may be due to my older SD card.

Handspring Treo 600

Whether due to leaked pictures or to get people excited about the pending acquisition of Handspring by Palm, Handspring is now showing a sneak peak at the Treo 600. This looks like it could be a real winner. As have mentioned, this would be a perfect mobile device for updating your weblog or photoblog. There should be some great software opportunities here. AvantGo Popular

My web access logs for the month of March are showing that AvantGo is now the most popular user agent and AvantGo servers account for 5 of the top 10 sites (by KByte). Looking closer, I realized that some visitors have added my list of PDA optimized web sites as a custom channel in AvantGo. This is a cool use of AvantGo — carry around this list of web sites. The trick is to specify the “link depth” to be 1. Otherwise, AvantGo will read the links page, then will follow to Cantoni.org home and continue from there. I think…
