Yahoo! Messenger 8

It was only 5 short weeks ago that we launched the beta for Yahoo! Messenger 8. Since then we’ve been busy putting on the finishing touches and fixing a bunch of reported bugs. The result came out earlier this evening as we launched the production release of version 8. As is kind of typical for internet software like this, the beta tends to garner much more attention, so when you finally push the production version, there isn’t always as much fanfare. But, this is the time that a broader marketing campaign will kick in, including promoting upgrades to the new…

Basecamp Print Styles

Providing print stylesheets is something I’ve been interested in for a while now. Catching up on the 37signals blog, I learned that they added better print stylesheets for their Basecamp product: We’re not big printers, but our customers tell us they are. They often have to print screens from Basecamp to take to meetings, present to clients, or prepare a report for their superiors. That summary hits the key message for me: you (the website author) may not print much from the web, but if some of your readers do, they will really appreciate this support. Having well-designed print stylesheets…

Maintainable Javascript

Some recent AJAX experimenting and the release of a developer plugin interface for Yahoo! Messenger have led me to dusting off my Javascript knowledge. Particularly with the Messenger plugins (written in HTML with a healthy dose of Javascript), we’ve really seen some poorly written code, both internal and external. I’m starting to put together my own plugin developer guide and have been on the lookout for good articles on the subject. Christian Heilmann just wrote a great article on Vitamin called The Importance of Maintainable JavaScript: JavaScript is hip again; there’s no doubt about it. But if you’re starting to…

Yahoo and MSN Messenger Interop

“Interop” has been the buzz phrase at work the past few months and tonight Yahoo! and Microsoft coordinated the launch of instant messaging interop between the two systems. This means you can stay on your Yahoo Messenger client and add MSN buddies directly (and vice versa). It may not be as prevalent in the press release or news http://www.doxycycline-buy.com/ coverage, but the recent beta of the Yahoo! Messenger for Mac client also works with MSN buddies, so we open up another channel for Mac users. To participate, you need to register on each side and make sure you’re running a…

Gnomedex 2006 Wrap-up

Just wrapped up two plus days at the Gnomedex conference in Seattle. For me, the conference was kind of a bust. I did meet some cool people and had a few interesting conversations, but at the end of the day I was asking myself “Why am I here?”. Most of the sessions were either hijacked by high-profile bloggers, or were clique-ish discussions between the “in” crowd. Two years ago, Gnomedex was much more of a user conference, but as its grown and achieved a higher profile, it seems to have changed a lot. I had some notes on all the…
